at Jasper Place High School

Formerly known as Hypermedia Technology the Web Design course sequence concentrates on computer based interactive media design, production and distribution. It is primarily concerned with the use of web-based application packages to produce materials for the Internet and other interactive hypermedia delivery systems. Students are taught to function in the world of the freelance digital media artist, learning about contracts, time logs, invoices and receipts. Several different scenarios are implemented to help students become comfortable with the business facet of the freelance artist.

We focus on four ways in which to create web sites over the three courses:

    *      Web Design 10: The HTML web site

    *      Web Design 20: The GRAPHIC web site

    *      Web Design 30: The CSS web site and the FLASH web site

The Web Design courses will be of interest to students interested in exploring careers in art and design, computer graphics, 3-D design, web site production and other forms of hypermedia production.

THINK - CONTRIBUTE - PARTICIPATE - MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Web Design

Welcome to Lab 584...

My expectations for student behaviour are high. I expect that all students will think, contribute, participate and strive to make a difference in class.

Students must at all times, follow the Jasper Place High School Technology Use Agreement signed at the time of registration. This policy shall take precedence over any other arrangements, discussions or allowances. We take this very seriously in our department and will not tolerate streaming of audio/video or the use of Internet games at any time. Misuse of our technology resources shall result in an immediate loss of privileges.

It is hoped that students will realize that there is a close correlation between regular and meaningful participation in a class and high marks in that class. If you are absent, I will contact home or your parent's place of work to let them know you weren't where you were supposed to be.

If a student is unhappy with a poor mark then he or she has one school-week from the date of the receipt of that mark to improve it. If a student completes or improves an assignment, he or she must fill out the Re-Marking Request Form with the details of their efforts and a request to have it re-marked. Only after a discussion with a parent will an extension beyond that week be granted. Otherwise, the mark stands as assigned.

If you do not complete an assignment by the established deadline, including quizzes and exams, you will be eligible for a total of 90% of the original mark. Assignments that are not completed by the end of that second week may be marked for feedback and recorded as "NHI" or Not Handed In. The intention is to make deadlines more important to all students, not just those who are regularly diligent in their studies.

My students are welcome to work in Lab 584 on our lessons at lunch hour throughout the week. Please show up at the beginning of the lunch hour, not towards the end of that time. Academic or department work only is permitted at this time. No friends may accompany the working student.

Cell phone use is not permitted in the lab at any time, even during breaks.  Please step outside if you feel that a call is necessary.  Cell phones and iPods will be confiscated by me if their use is detected in the room during a class. The items will be returned via the administration at the main office at the end of the day and I will contact your parents so that they are aware of the problem.  Often, I will request that students simply turn off their phones and put them on their desks.

Personal Media Players will not be permitted for use while in class at Jasper Place High School. As with cell phones, all devices of this nature must be turned off and put out of sight while you are in class. This includes headphones, earbuds or any other listening device. To help facilitate this request, students will be asked to leave all bags, purses and outerwear at the side of the room when they enter class.

The point here is that we can review these rules quickly at the start of the term and move on to the learning that you came here for. Those who "get it" and put some effort into the academics of the course quickly experience success and a working relationship that hopefully, is similar to that of the career workplace.
